Man drives length of Great Britain in world’s tiniest car

It’s the longest road trip Great Britain has to offer – 874 miles (1,407 km) from John O’Groats in Scotland to Land’s End in Cornwall – and now one man is making it in the smallest production car in the world.

31-year-old vintage vehicle enthusiast Alex Orchin, from Wivelsfield in East Sussex, is taking the one-seater Peel P50 from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for the Children in Need charity.

First made on the Isle of Man between 1962 and 1965, then revived in 2011, the P50 is a metre tall, 137 centimetres long, and weighs just 56 kilos.

It has a top speed of around 45-60 kilometres per hour, and features a single headlight, one windscreen wiper, one door, and three wheels; the original model even lacked a reverse gear, meaning to turn it around, you had to get out and push, or pull it by the handle on the back.

Mr Orchin’s “Jogle” (John O’Groats-Land’s End) trip – believed to be the first time it’s been attempted in a P50 – has so far raised £5148 (around $9500 AUD) on GoFundMe, more than double his initial goal of £2,000 (around $3,700 AUD).

The Peel P50 is street legal in both the UK and the US, and – if you need another reason to invest – is small enough to park basically anywhere.
