Intergenerational living could be the next big thing in retirement

If you’re looking to downsize but want more diverse neighbours than you’d find in a typical retirement village or land lease community, intergenerational Community Apartment Projects (CAPs) might be for you.

Developments like Midtown MacPark in Sydney – on the site of the old Ivanhoe Estate in Macquarie Park – are blending retirement living with traditional apartment buildings, with the aim of encouraging residents of different generations to interact and take care of one another.

Midtown MacPark in particular is slated to mix seniors living with affordable rental units and social housing, plus amenities and features such as a new school, childcare centres, a “town plaza” with shops and restaurants, and open space including parks and playgrounds.

Of course, developments like this don’t offer the traditional supports or like-minded communities that traditional retirement villages do. Still, as they become more common, they’re an option to consider if you’re looking to break from tradition and embrace the intergenerational lifestyle.
