It’s a common trick of politicians, business and sports leaders to always blame someone else for their failings – and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just did a doozy on Australia.
Mr DeSantis, a leading figure in Donald Trump’s Republican party during his time in office, castigated Australia’s response to COVID-19, warning the country has gone “dramatically off the rails” and likening it to communist China.
“Look what’s going on in Australia right now,” he said at the International Boat Builders’ Exhibition and Conference in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday.
“You know, they’re enforcing, after a year and a half, they’re still enforcing lockdowns by the military. That’s not a free country. It’s not a free country at all.”
It could be argued that Mr DeSantis, who banned vaccine mandates for workers and mask mandates, is the one who is inept.
Florida has had 3,605,864 cases of COVID-19 and sadly 54,067 people have died. It currently has 949,659 active cases and has a death rate of 2,517 people per million people.
Compare this to Australia where there have been 102,729 cases of COVID-19, with 1,278 people dying from the virus. There are 26,670 active cases and the country has a death rate of 49 people per million people.
That’s what’s going on in Australia, Mr DeSantis.
