Why artist James Giddy is creating murals to Curtin Heritage Living’s new aged care facility

There is the widely held belief that entering an aged care home separates people from the wider community.

Curtin Heritage Living commissioned local artist James Giddy to complete several murals for their new residential aged care facility, Marine Views Cottesloe in Perth, WA, to change that belief.

“We are always looking for ways to engender positive responses in the environments we create. Artwork is one way we can achieve this. One of the reasons we commissioned James and his work was his use of the gesture, life and colour in his work.”

“We also knew that many people in our community may have experienced James’ work in other familiar settings, both in Perth and regional areas,” said Curtin Heritage Living Managing Director David Cox.

“From a broader perspective, we believe aged care environments should be appealing and contemporary. The physical environment allows opportunity for us to begin to re-define how aged care is perceived in the broader community.

“Our hope is that initiatives such as this and facilities such as Marine Views Cottesloe, will create opportunities for people to consider aged care spaces as integral parts of the community rather than disconnected environments for a particular demographic within that community.”

Giddy said the idea was to create a bold and engaging welcome statement as the visitors and residents enter into the RAC.

“I hope that it sets a positive tone for the audience from the get-go,” said Giddy.

Curtin Heritage Living’s Marine Views Cottesloe is scheduled to officially open in December.
