Dunkin’, one of the largest chains of donut and coffee shop in the world, has opened its first digital-only store in Boston, Massachusetts, on Tuesday.
Instead of ordering from an employee at a counter, patrons can get their ‘Dunkaccinos’ by ordering at a digital kiosk or through the Dunkin’ app. The order is processed by Dunkin’s computers and your frozen matcha latte and apple cider donut will imminently be available at an “enhanced designated pick-up area” (we’re guessing that means an unmanned counter).
There is no need to talk, no need to strike up a conversation.
Humans are not involved in taking the order, but they will still be working at the restaurant Dunkin’ Digital, as the location in Beacon Hill, is known.
Dunkin’ maintained that the shop will have roughly the same number of staff as conventional franchisees.
“Because guests are in control of the ordering experience, the on-site crew can focus on fulfilling orders with heightened speed and accuracy to offer a superior restaurant experience and keep on-the-go guests runnin’ through the day,” Dunkin’ said.
This is the first but it won’t be the last. Whatever happened to striking up a conversation with an employee at the counter?
