Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, Senator Richard Colbeck, might know more than he cracks on.
If Armageddon, or global anarchy, took place Australia’s island state of Tasmania – the site of Senator Colbeck’s farm – would be the fourth best place to run to, according to a UK study.
Survivors of a Doomsday scenario would be best to seek refuge in New Zealand, then Iceland, the UK, Tasmania and Ireland, according to a study by the Global Sustainability Institute, at Anglia Ruskin University, whose head office is in Cambridge, 89km north of London.
The researchers, whose study was published in Sustainability, claimed human civilisation was “in a perilous state”. They said it was because of the highly interconnected and energy-intensive society that had developed and the environmental damage this had caused.
A collapse could arise from shocks, such as a severe financial crisis, the impacts of the climate crisis, destruction of nature, an even worse pandemic than COVID-19 or a combination of these, the scientists said.
Countries were ranked according to their ability to grow food for their population, protect their borders from unwanted mass migration, and maintain an electrical grid and a small degree of manufacturing ability. Islands in temperate regions and mostly with low population densities came out on top.
We’re not sure how the UK fits into that list though with its large population – wishful thinking on the part of the scientists?
