[Video] President Obama’s a good sport

Hot off the press, so to speak. You may not have heard of the American comedy duo known as Key and Peele. I confess I hadn’t, but here’s a brief description from their Comedy Central web page:

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are the stars of Key & Peele, a show that examines life in a distinctively provocative and irreverent way. Whether it’s anger-translating the president, spoofing Nazis or ordering up some soul food, Key & Peele showcases the guys’ camaraderie and unique point of view, born from their experiences growing up biracial in a not-quite-post-racial world.

But I didn’t need to know who they were to really enjoy this short video (less than five minutes) of President Obama’s annual stand-up comedy routine at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner 2015 over the weekend.

In case you’re not familiar with this annual event, the White House Correspondents’ dinner is the night the President traditionally does a stand-up comedy routine to raise money for scholarships for young journalists. Naturally there is also a fair bit of good-natured ‘payback’ to the journalists and media outlets for their coverage over the year.

This year, President Obama worked with comedian Keegan-Michael Key – the half of the comedy duo known for his comedy persona as the President’s ‘anger translator’ (the other half of the duo, Jordan Peele, plays the part of the President in the usual sketch).

It’s always refreshing to see politicians being not just ‘human’ – something this particular President has been especially good at demonstrating – but genuinely self-effacing and actually very funny. I think this makes President Obama a very good sport.

[As an aside, you can watch former President, George W Bush doing his own stand-up routine at the same event in 2008:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH1RfcuNNoI]
