Port Pirie, the second busiest port in South Australia, has the unwanted title of the S***test Town in the state, according to a Facebook page.
S*** Towns of Australia co-founder Geoff Rissole said the city, 223km north of the state capital Adelaide and home to one of the world’s largest primary lead smelting facilities and the third largest silver producer, always appeared in every list compiled by the business.
“It’s a bit of a running gag,” Mr Rissole told the ABC.
“We have actually experimented with dropping Port Pirie out and we tend to get a lot of complaints about it, so unfortunately it’s sort of nestled in there at the foot of the power rankings each week.”
Port Pirie Mayor Leon Stephens said the award is not funny.
“I do really want Mr Rissole to make himself known next time he comes to Port Pirie, so that we can actually show him some of the good side of things, and maybe we might drop down to fifth or ninth on the list,” Mr Stephens said.
Western Australia’s S***est Towns poll starts on 17 May.
