In front of three generations of their families, 93-year-old Marie Hill looking radiant was pushed down the aisle to marry the new love of her life, 100-year-old Ron Hedley, who waited in his wheelchair.
“In the autumn of their lives, these two beautiful people, Marie and Ron, have found their friendship and care for one another have blossomed into love,” chaplain Pat Betts told the gathering at Opal HealthCare’s Cameron Park Care Community in Newcastle, NSW, on Sunday.
Love is limitless and Marie and Ron fell for each other at an exercise class in 2019.
“She said, ‘When are you going to marry me?’,” Mr Hedley told the Newcastle Herald. “I said, ‘Give me time, I’ve got to think about it’.”
The pair held hands during the service before momentarily letting go to slip on their wedding ring.
After exchanging their vows, the chaplain said: “And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for.”
It was a first for Pat Betts, joining in marriage a couple aged 100 and in their nineties.
“I’m very optimistic for this pair, that their love is only going to continue to grow and blossom,” she said.
Marie’s son, Glen Hill, said he had noticed the effect of love on his Mum.
“She used to ring all the time, 10 phone calls a day, now it’s really hard to catch her when you ring her,” he said.
Ron Hedley said he was planning a honeymoon, perhaps in a couple of months, to which his new bride responded: “Oh, I don’t know if he can stand up to a honeymoon. He’s 100. We’ll have to wait and see.”
