What the? Switzerland’s female soldiers no longer have to wear men’s underwear

In what is clearly a lightbulb moment for the country’s armed forces, the Swiss army is going to give out women’s underwear to its female recruits as it looks to attract more women to its ranks, CNN reports.

Apparently, up to this point, female soldiers have been issued with men’s underwear as part of the standard uniform, which is often (unsurprisingly) too big or ill-fitting.

But this month, a new trial will see women provided with two different sets of female underwear for warmer and colder months.

It’s part of a wider update of the current Swiss army uniforms which have been around since the mid-1980s, which will allow for individual adjustments. For example, camouflage trousers will now come with an adjustable waistband (handy if you’ve overdone the rations).

Women currently make up about 1% of the Swiss armed forces (compared to 17.9% of ADF personnel in Australia), but the country wants to increase that figure to 10% by 2030.

We think it’s likely that this goal will take more than fresh ‘Reg Grundies’ – but it’s a good start.
