Wild sheep affectionately named Baarack is shorn for first time and leaves a 35kg fleece behind

I bet that was a weight off his shoulders!

A wild sheep that was rescued by wildlife carers left behind a fleece weighing 35kg after being sheered for the first time in years – talk about an overdue haircut!

Baarack, the name his rescuers gave him, was reported to Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary, near Lancefield, Victoria, about 60 kilometres north of Melbourne, by a Good Samaritan.

Mission staff member Kyle Behrend told Reuters Baarack was once an owned sheep, with signs of having been tagged in the past, meaning he would have once enjoyed a good sheering.

“Sheep need to be shorn at least annually otherwise the fleece continues to grow and grow, as happened here,” Mr Behrend said.

The fleece that was shorn from Baarack weighs almost half as much as an adult kangaroo, giving some perspective as to how long the sheep had been roaming the wilds.

Baarack now has a new ‘fleece’ on life at Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary home, along with other rescued sheep.
