Aged care peak bodies commencing voter campaign in marginal government seats ahead of Royal Commission results

After more than two decades of inaction on aged care, the gloves have come off as the industry unites to tell the Government to stop ignoring expert reports.

The Australian Aged Care Collaboration (AACC), consisting of industry standard bearers like Anglicare Australia, Baptist Care Australia, Catholic Health Australia and UnitingCare Australia, launched the ‘It’s time to care about aged care’ campaign on Monday.

It was a shot across the Federal Government’s bow ahead of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s Final Report, due for release on 26 February.

The AACC will push for the Government to act on the Commission’s recommendations and overhaul the industry after failing to address widespread concerns for decades.

Aged care operators have had enough.

If the Government fails to act the AACC said it will make aged care a major election issue with 15 marginal seats across the country having a combined 815,000 voters aged over 55.

A petition to encourage local MP’s to act was also launched as part of the campaign and has already garnered more than 1,000 signatures a day.

The ball is now firmly in the Federal Government’s court, a government that holds power by just three seats.
