The new US President has revealed former President Donald Trump left him a “very generous letter” in the Oval Office – but has stopped short of revealing its details, prompting a hilarious response online as people speculated on its contents.
It is a tradition that the outgoing President leave a handwritten letter for his successor, but given Trump has ignored another long-held tradition of inviting the incoming President Biden to the White House during the transition period, as former President Obama had done for him, the letter came as a surprise to political pundits.
President Biden said he would not divulge what Trump wrote until the two had spoken privately.
Social media users however had a great time trying to guess what the former President had written.
One Twitter user joked that the note had said: “Joe, you know I won.”
Others also had fun at Trump’s expense:
Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday, pledging to give his ‘whole soul’ to reunify the country after years of unrest, riots and division.
But despite his departure from the White House, Trump is not ready to say ‘never again’, telling supporters “we will be back in some form”.
Talk is now that the former President could possibly start his own political party – watch this space then.
