Few people would associate the Olympic motto ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ with the expression, ‘Pop, lock and drop’, but this might be about to change.
Breakdancing has officially become an Olympic sport, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirming its inclusion in the 2024 Paris Games.
Under new IOC rules, Olympic host cities can propose sports that are popular in their country for inclusion, to help attract draw more local interest, hence breakdancing’s inclusion.
These rules would have seen skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing join the official medal program at Tokyo, which has been postponed to next year.
Despite the new inclusions, the Paris Olympics is likely to see 10 fewer events than the Tokyo Games, with athlete cuts expected in sports like weightlifting and boxing.
So, when you see someone doing the worm or a spinaroonie on the medal podium in Paris, don’t say we didn’t give you plenty of warning!
