Swingers parties allowed but dancing at weddings banned – calls for Queensland’s coronavirus restrictions to be revisited

The Gold Coast entertainment industry is leading calls for Queensland’s coronavirus restrictions to be revisited – and when you mull over the fine print, it’s easy to see why.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been characterised by an understandably risk-averse approach to the pandemic, but it’s led to some (ahem) unusual inconsistencies.

One such example comes when you compare weddings to swingers’ parties.

Under current restrictions, only the wedded couple and their parents may dance at a wedding.

But if people want to throws keys into a bowl at the reception, (technically) they can go for their life.

Wedding entertainer Nik Edser spoke of this frustration in an interview with the ABC.

“The irony is if I was invited to a wedding this weekend to attend with my wife and I wanted to dance with her there, then I wouldn’t be allowed to,” he said.

“But if we decided to go to a club and swap partners with some people who we don’t know where they’re from or who they really are, that’s OK.”

Mr Edser says he has nothing against the adult industry, but said it was time for certain restrictions to “be lightened up” given the state’s low case numbers.

“(It’s) hurting photographers, celebrants, florists, stylists,” he said.

“Weddings are a private event where I feel it should be allowed between family and friends.”

Interesting to see what you can (and can’t) do!
