Families reunited after aged care centre creates visiting pods

Aged care residents are doing it tough in COVID-19, but some homes have identified innovative ways to keep families in touch with their loved ones.

Multicultural Aged Care Services (MACS) in Geelong, south-west of Melbourne, is one such home, introducing a special ‘visiting pod’ that allows residents to interact with their family while separated by a glass partition.

Chief executive of MACS, Joy Leggo, says the pods have already made a huge difference.

“It’s allowed our families to come in and see and have a visit and chat in out pod,” she said.

The pods run seven days a week from 10am until 7pm.  They’re wheelchair and comfort chair accessible, so all residents can use them.

Ms Leggo says while the exercise took a bit of effort to set up, it has been well worth it.

“To see the joy on the residents’ faces as they come out, but also the families as well,” Ms Leggo says.

“Because they have actually been able to see their loved ones and see that they are well and they are happy is just so heart-warming.”

We love to see initiatives like this!
