Fans of a pint (or two!) have a chance to acquire a piece of Australian beer-drinking history as Queensland’s famous ‘beer island’ hits the market for the first time in 17 years.
Pumpkin Island, as it is otherwise known, is 6ha in size and has an idyllic Great Barrier Reef location, around 14km from Yeppoon on the mainland.
It was owned by South African property developers John and Sonja Rumble, who gave the island to their son Wayne on his 27th birthday with the instructions “make it work”.
So, between 2012 and 2015, Wayne leased Pumpkin Islands to Castlemaine Perkins, the Queensland brewery behind the famous beer XXXX.
It was renamed XXXX Island in that time as part of a marketing campaign – and the name stuck!
Beer Island has since been turned into an eco-friendly luxury resort, which might not suit the adopted name but probably makes more sense given the beautiful setting.
And if you’ve got a spare $25 million lying around (if only) it could be yours!
