Retirement village residents start their own brewery during COVID

0

A ginger beer brewing and bottling project is among the winning initiatives from retirement living, aged care and home care provider Bolton Clarke’s inaugural innovation tournament, designed to encourage residents to stay connected.

Residents at Bolton Clarke’s Macquarie View community can now relax and share a ginger beer with friends at Bolton Old Boys Brewery.

And it’s a team effort – 20 enthusiastic brewers are now lending their expertise!

“Six of them have done home brewing before so it’s a real treat to be able to revisit a much-loved pastime and show off old skills,” said Bolton Clarke Diversional Therapist Colleen Bruce.

“We are taking it in turns to make batches in small groups. It’s been great to be collaborative while social distancing. It has given everyone a sense of accomplishment and purpose – even our local brewing shop is invested in our idea!”

The other winner was a ‘hole in the wall’ café at Bolton Clarke’s Broadwater Gardens village, which lets residents get their daily caffeine fix while social distancing.

COVID-19 social distancing restrictions have many of us feeling like a drink, so this is a great initiative!
