Banks to send free debit cards to older Australians to pay for bills and groceries online

0

Good news for people who have been caught out by the move from cash and EFTPOS to tap-and-go payments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cards – which are being fast-tracked by financial watchdog ASIC – will be sent to around half a million Australians who don’t already have one so they can use it to shop online while they are in self-isolation or quarantine.

There is no requirement for the cards to be activated or used, but it will come with instructions to contact your bank if you do want to set it up.

If you have a relative who may be receiving one, you may also want to put your hand up to help them through the card activation process.

For more information, call your bank.
