Power of the pen: Opal aged care homes keeping residents connected during COVID-19

0

Aged care homes are finding new and creative ways for residents to connect with their families and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Opal Aged Care is no exception.

Residents at their Melville aged care home have revived the art of letter writing, sending and receiving letters from family and friends.

Other homes have also set up pen pal programs for residents that are leading to some great connections.

At their Winston Hills home, residents and staff have taken up the Artful program run by the Museum of Contemporary Art, while other homes have turned to dancing (keeping a safe distance, of course!), indoor gardening and dress-up days to keep everyone entertained.

The residents at Melville have also begun a ‘Kindness Pandemic’, gifting chocolates and notes to staff to thank them for their work.

Great work by both the residents and the team at Opal.

Frank and Earnest love to have conversations about the things that matter in life to most people but especially to those of us with a few years behind us. We start some conversations, we pick up others, we share stories and ideas and try to stimulate thinking.
