Sunshine Coast lifesavers help 96-year-old man fulfil dream of returning to the ocean

Lifesavers at the Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club helped Len Stevens to get in the water last weekend after his daughter approached them for help.

“96-year-old Len Stevens just wanted to get his feet wet, so how could we not make it happen for him,” their Facebook post said.

Volunteer lifesaver Eliza Dreves – whose father is also a lifesaver with the Club – told Yahoo News Australia that Mr Stevens was “chuffed” with his dip.

“He kept wanting to push the walker deeper,” she said. “I thought he’d be ready to go after five minutes but he stayed with Dad and his family for about 30 minutes, which was so beautiful to see.”

The Club has a mat that they can roll down to the water’s edge to help beachgoers with mobility issues enjoy the water.

A small gesture – but clearly one that meant a lot. As one of the Facebook commenters said: “Not all heroes wear capes.”
