Scottish journalist tricked – into holding terrifying Aussie ‘drop bear’

Even with the bushfires devastating the country, Australians are proving they still have a sense of humour, this week ‘taking the piss’ out of a Scottish reporter here to cover the fires – on film.

In the video uploaded to Facebook by Australian video producer Sean Mulcahy, UK’s ITV News Asia correspondent Debi Edward (pictured) was at Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park when she was offered the chance of a close encounter with a terrifying Australian species – the ‘drop bear’.

Kitted out in protective boots, armour and goggles, the clip shows veterinarian Dr Garnett Hall warning Ms Edward of the danger she’s about to be in.

“They’ve actually got really small fangs, and the interesting thing about the fangs is they have a really mild venom,” Dr Hall tells her with a straight face. “It’s not like a snake venom that can make you really sick, it just causes a lot of really local irritation.”

He then backs away as the Park’s owner approaches with a koala, leaving the journo scared stiff.

“I’ve been told that he can sense if I’m worried,” she says, before the fear takes over and she begs them to take the “vicious” beast away.

It’s worth watching the video here – though a warning, Ms Edward does drop a few choice words when the penny drops.

The laughs are going towards a good cause though, with Mr Mulcahy urging viewers to donate to bushfire relief efforts for wildlife on the Island where over 20,000 hectares have been burned.

As he says, “In times of tragedy and incessant misery, sometimes humour is the best medicine.”
