In news that might make Instagram models think twice about their next selfie…. exposure to the blue light emitted from smart phones may accelerate ageing, a US study has found.
The research on fruit flies – which live for between 40 and 50 days – found that soaking up the LED waves decays brain and eye cells and shortened the flies’ life expectancy.
Even blind flies – which were born without eyes – showed likewise damage, suggesting they do not have to see the light to be at risk.
The effects aren’t as conclusive for humans, who receive less light than fly brains.
However, flies have proven to be useful before in understanding aspects of human development, behavior, and disease.
The researchers say while their findings pose some questions about the effect of artificial light, there are steps you can take to protect yourself.
They advise wearing glasses with amber lenses to filter blue light and changing phone and other device settings to block blue emissions.
That, or you could always give yourself a digital detox – and put your phone down for a while.
