Older Australians underestimate their life expectancy by five years

How much longer do you think you have left?

New research shows older Australians are living five years longer than they think they will – with implications for both their finances and their bucket list.

The research, from pension provider Challenger, shows older people thought an average 65-year-old Australian would live to 83.2 years when the average life expectancy is in fact 88 years.

Today, we are typically living well into our late 80s – 10 years longer than in the 1990s – and the most common age of death is 88 – while 20 years earlier, it was 78 – the study found.

Granted, it’s a reminder for some extra financial planning to make sure you can kick up your heels comfortably when the day comes – but this could also be news to give you a new lease on life.
