Rock’n’Roll heaven: the manager of Australian rock band INXS is building a retirement village

Talk about a career change.

64-year-old rock veteran Chris Murphy (pictured) has plans to build a massive development in Ballina on the Far North Coast of NSW, featuring a new retirement village where residents can “rock till they drop”.

Mr Murphy wants to build a full precinct on a currently empty 36-hectare site opposite Ballina Airport (20 minutes from Byron Bay) – featuring not just a village, but also residences for young people, a ‘creative hub’ and, of course, an INXS museum.

The new precinct would also be environmentally friendly. Mr Murphy has plans to create a “car-free” zone where visitors and residents move around by walking and cycling.

The development still needs to be approved by local council before this rock-inspired dream land can go ahead. Plus, the work that needs to be done on site before construction can even begin looks like it will cost around $15 million alone and take until late 2020.

But the music industry legend is confident he’s on to something great.

“I’ve been picking trends all my life, and hopefully I’m still reasonably good at it,” he said.

Sounds like this precinct will be one for the ages.
