The conversations of life

Would you live in a ‘robotic’ house? IKEA just made it possible!

It might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie – but trust us, it’s real.

The Swedish furniture manufacturing giant has revealed a new range of robotic furniture that can add an extra eight square metres of space to a standard one-bedroom apartment by transforming a bedroom into a living room at the click of a button.

The new Rognan range (pictured) was developed by IKEA and tech firm Ori – and officially launches in Hong Kong and Japan next year.

Using the idea of ‘nano’ or ‘small-space living’, the design allows you to robotically rearrange a one-space apartment and use it in multiple ways – rather than having different rooms that each have their own purpose.

For example, by mechanically re-shuffling large furniture and walls, the same space could be used as a bedroom, walk-in closet, work area or living room. See how in this video.

Already impressed? It gets better. This robotic apartment is also extremely environmentally friendly – the kitchen has even been designed to cut down on food waste by storing items at different temperatures.

What a time to be alive.
