The not-for-profit Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) has created The 10K Project in the hopes of transforming its aged care homes into thriving, intergenerational community hubs.
Started as a joint venture between SCC, GroundSwell and Western Sydney University, The 10K Project is currently running as a three-year trial well being program that connects two of SCC’s homes (and their residents) with community resources and networks within a 10-kilometre radius.
Bringing the homes together with local schools, community centres, faith-based organisations, TAFE and universities, arts centres, businesses (and plenty more), 10K uses their existing resources and programs to create a vibrant and active community where residents can increase their quality of life.
If the pilot program proves a success, SCC says it plans to expand 10K to all its sites.
The good news is it’s already been getting some very positive attention. The project won SSC the prestigious ‘Innovation of the year – Community Care Model’ at the 7th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards held in Singapore last month (pictured).
