The much-anticipated report by lawyer Robert Mueller found that Trump did not collude with Russia to affect the 2016 election, but at the same time was unable to draw a conclusion “one way or the other” on whether the president ‘obstructed justice’ during the investigation.
Mr Mueller said that while the report doesn’t conclude that the president committed a crime, “it also does not exonerate him.”
With the lawyer taking a pass on making a definitive call, the decision was left to the Attorney-General – who was nominated by Trump after sending justice department a private memo criticising Mueller’s investigation – and his Deputy.
They released a ‘summary’ of the report and announced they would not pursue charges against Trump, saying there wasn’t “sufficient evidence” to do so.
The Attorney-General is now facing public pressure to release the report in full – mostly by Democrats who’d love to get their hands on what they have no doubt will be damning evidence against the President.
But Trump doesn’t seem bothered – claiming “Total EXONERATION” on Twitter earlier this week.
