A dog on a skateboard might sound like an unusual sight, but it’s a regular one for residents of Providence aged care residence in Bacchus Marsh in Victoria.
The facility is treated to a visit from Rusty and Qed the Papillons every Thursday for their K9 circus performance, which features many spectacular acts of canine talent – including skateboarding, playing the keyboard and ‘counting’ in barks.
The event is managed by not-for-profit Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) and run by husband and wife team, Robyn (pictured – right) and Barry.
The pair began volunteering their pet show at disability and aged care sites across the area after they retired 20 years ago. They live in an adjoining retirement village and both had parents who lived at Providence.
The joy that the circus brings to the residents is plain to see. One resident, Kata, who was once terrified of dogs, has overcome her fears thanks to the weekly visits – she’s now the show’s biggest fan.
