Four in 10 Australians aged over 55 don’t have a financial plan for the next five years

That’s almost half of older Australians. Even fewer have a plan that goes past the age of 60.

The Governments wants to change that figure. They have launched free Life Checks for over-45’s with an online quiz that takes just 10 minutes to complete.

There are two Checks available – one for people aged 45 to 64 and the other for over-65’s – covering four key areas: health, work, finance and social life.

The quiz asks questions including ‘Who depends on you?’, ‘How do you manage your money day to day?’ and ‘What are your health priorities?’

The online tool then ranks all four categories out of five stars and gives you a score on how you are currently tracking, plus a list of recommendations. All results are private and can be emailed directly to you.

We tried it out and were impressed, particularly with the financial advice. We all have goals in mind for the future – whether it’s downsizing, making a ‘sea change’ or ‘tree change’ or joining the ‘grey nomads’ – but it can be difficult to know how to start planning for them.

But with the average Australian now living well into their eighties, it’s worth being prepared for the next stage in your life.
