New Aussie dementia facility giving residents new lease on life

NewDirection Care facility in Bellmere, Queensland is changing the lives of those suffering with dementia and making them feel more at home. Located 45 minutes from Brisbane CBD the newly established facility with 60 per cent of its residents living with dementia has been described as a micro town.

Described as a micro town, NewDirection Care is a far cry from the usual aged care facilities, complete with a shopping precinct featuring a hair salon, cafe, corner store, wellness centre and  cinema as well as a fruit and vegetable garden and men’s shed.

Natasha Chadwick, NewDirection Care’s Chief Executive Officer, told A Current Affair the 17 homes have been designed around six different Australian lifestyle models providing residents with the freedom and independence they each desire and facilitating residents of each home to make choices together as a household.

Angie Nichol whose husband Stephen was diagnosed with dementia following a cycling accident told the channel nine program “he’s happy, I’m happy. It’s like we are still at home”.

A practising aged care physiotherapist for the past 13 years, Jill has worked in more than 50 metropolitan and regional aged care homes. She has also toured care facilities across the US and Africa. She is a passionate advocate for both the residents in aged care and the staff that serve them.
