Only in America: US shutdown forces Trump to serve up fast food at White House reception

It’s the equivalent of Scott Morrison inviting the Sydney Roosters around for a sanga.

The US President has laid out a dinner of McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s burgers and Domino’s pizzas for a championship college football team after the White House’s chefs were put on leave as the government shutdown there drags on.

“We have pizzas, we have 300 hamburgers, many, many French fries, all of our favourite foods,” Trump told the press.

He then hopped on Twitter the next day to talk up the dinner: “Great being with the National Champion Clemson Tigers at the White House last night. Because of the Shutdown I served them massive amounts of Fast Food (I paid), over 1,000 hamberders etc.”

Understandably, Twitter had a field day.

Around one-quarter of the US government has been shut down for the past 27 days as Trump has refused to sign off on more government funding until Congress agrees to provide US$5.7 billion to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

Something tells us the 800,000 Americans and their families who are going without pay checks couldn’t care less about how many “hamberders” there are.
