Yes, in the under $20 category at least. The supermarket retailer’s cheap-as Story Bay Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from Western Australia’s Margaret River region has taken out the Winestate’s Wine of the Year Awards in Adelaide, knocking out over 2,500 other wines for the title.
Described as having “vibrant tropical fruit aromas including passionfruit, with notes of lime and blossom, hints of herbal tea and fresh cut grass” (just what I want from my bottle of plonk), the white wine was chosen by an expert panel made up of masters of wine, wine scientists and winemakers after an extensive 12 months of blind tastings (where can we sign up?)
Head of the judging panel, Peter Simic, said while the result was close, the wine really deserved the trophy for delivering on quality and value.
“For the amazing value price of $7, plus high blind judging score, this should be everybody’s everyday drinking wine,” he said.
It’s not the first time that Coles has delivered bang for buck on its booze however. In 2016, they won the same award for their $5 a pop Big & Bold Shiraz 2015.
You might have to get in fast though – the Big & Bold sold out immediately after its win.
The wine available at Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, First Choice Liquor and First Choice Liquor Market if you’re keen to stock up – hell, it’s so cheap you could even set up your own wine fountain.
