Only in America: Trump defends daughter for using personal email for government business

The President railed against Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election campaign for using a private email server while she was Secretary of State – the Presidential Records Act requires all White House communications and records be preserved using official channels.

Now a White House review has found his daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump used her personal account to email Cabinet officials, White House aides and assistants – and he’s singing a different tune.

“Just so you understand, early and for a little period of time, Ivanka did some emails,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday.

“They weren’t classified like Hillary Clinton. They weren’t deleted like Hillary Clinton. She wasn’t doing that to hide her emails.”

“There was no deletion, there was no nothing,” he added. “Hillary Clinton deleted 33,000 emails. She had a server in the basement. That’s the real story.”

Actually, the 33,000 emails that Ms Clinton deleted were personal, rather than the work communications that Ms Trump sent.

Ms Trump has denied being aware of the rules, but considering Trump famously dubbed his rival ‘Crooked Hillary’ over the incident, we find it hard to believe she was ignorant.

Then again, it wouldn’t be the first time a Trump has ignored the law.
