Only in America: Trump hails “incredible” day for Republicans in US midterm elections – misses that his party lost the House

The US President Donald Trump labelled the US midterms as a “big day” for Republicans – despite the Democrats winning control of the House of Representatives.

“Those that worked with me in this incredible Midterm Election, embracing certain policies and principles, did very well. Those that did not, say goodbye! Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!” he tweeted.

The Republican Party has increased their majority in the Senate so he wasn’t completely off-target.

But the Democrats’ control of the House means that they can now use their oversight powers to launch investigations into a range of issues – including Russian interference in the 2016 election and questions over the President’s past tax returns.

Trump isn’t worried about this though, and says he plans to use the Senate to undermine them.

“If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level. Two can play that game!”

We’re not sure we’d be so confident though.

Examining vague “leaks of classified information” is one thing.

Probing serious allegations of international political interference and tax evasion is another.
