Only in America: First Lady Melania Trump’s parents sworn in as US citizens – under same family migration path opposed by the President

Slovenian immigrants Viktor and Amalija Knavs both took the citizenship oath at a private ceremony with their lawyer confirming that Mrs Trump had sponsored their green cards.

US citizens can currently obtain residency for their relatives, but the US President wants to replace what he calls “chain migration” with a skills-based system.

His plan would limit immigrants like his wife to sponsoring only their spouses and underage children to join them in the US – not their parents, adult children or siblings – a step that experts predict would cut legal immigration to the US by almost half.

He’s also called for eliminating a visa lottery program for people from countries under-represented in the US – a big shift for a country that prides itself on welcoming the tired and poor.

Of course, in the White House, it does seem to be one rule for family and another for everybody else.
