The university’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Understanding Dementia” has been ranked No. 1 by the independent global MOOC evaluating body Class Central, with its “Preventing Dementia” course named No. 2.
The courses are aimed at a range of people including people with dementia and their families and carers and have been delivered to over 200,000 students through the University’s Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre since starting five years ago.
We think it’s a great concept. More of us are encountering dementia as we get older, but we don’t always know that much about it.
Hobart student Sandra Stephens studied both dementia MOOCs to better care for her 84-year-old mother who has Alzheimer’s Disease.
“I loved learning about person-centred care, which helped me understand how to give mum the best quality of life and care options,” she said.
With research showing that the standard of care provided at home, hospitals and aged care homes increases if doctors and family members are more educated about dementia, it’s worth looking into if you are interested.
The next enrolment date for Understanding Dementia is February 2019, while Preventing Dementia is running again in October 2018.
