No excuse for elder abuse: keep yourself safe with these tips

0

While recent media headlines have focused on cases of abuse and neglect in our aged care facilities, it’s easy to forget that elder abuse is a serious issue across the whole community.

The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) estimates between two and 10 per cent of older people experience abuse every year, with financial abuse within families making up half of these cases.

Sadly many cases, particularly financial abuse, go unreported.

Uniting Care Community’s Elder Abuse Prevention Unit has these tips for people to keep themselves safe:

  • Be active in your community. Keep a network of support with friends, neighbours and family.
  • Keep in touch with community networks such as health workers, church or medical practitioners.
  • Seek independent and/or professional advice when making any changes to your financial or living arrangements.
  • Don’t make decisions or sign documents until you have all the information you need – and again seek independent advice.
  • Write down important numbers such as friends and police and have them handy.
  • If abuse happens, seek help. Tell someone you trust and feel comfortable with. If unattended, abuse does not go away and may escalate.

We think it’s good advice – it’s time to stamp out this ‘hidden’ problem.

If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, call the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192 for confidential advice, help and referrals.

Today (June 15) is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
