US researchers say they have confirmed what the males of our species have always maintained is true – men are better at navigating.
Using two experiments, they looked at how long it took participants to reach locations in a computer-generated maze – and whether they reached it by following a direct route or not.
The result? Men tended to take shortcuts to get from A to B more quickly, while women usually followed routes they already knew.
But did the men always come out on top?
The researchers have noted some of the women did just as well as the men.
They says it’s all up to your navigation strategy – learn your landmarks and you’ll always get to your destination faster.
Traditionally men have also spent more time playing video games too – something the researchers say could give them an advantage in a virtual environment. On the road this could prove a different story though.
So don’t go boasting about your navigating skills yet men – with women over 55 now making up 1.9 million of Australia’s 14.5 million gamers, we may just overtake you.
