If you thought Australia was a dangerous place to live, spare a thought for residents of Lake Worth in Florida who received this warning:
“Power outage and zombie alert for residents of Lake Worth and Terminus. There are now far less than seven thousand three hundred and eighty customers involved due to extreme zombie activity. Restoration time uncertain.”
Thankfully, there wasn’t an undead uprising – rather it was a false alert triggered by a power outage.
The city’s Public Information Officer Ben Kerr issued a statement to make it clear there wasn’t any “zombie activity currently” and to apologise for the message.
He’s told Gizmodo the warnings are a throwback to when Hurricane Irma hit the state last year and someone (clearly with a cheeky sense of humour) added zombie references to the system’s pre-written alerts. These have now all been removed.
“Hopefully the next time there is a zombie invasion alert,” he said, “it will be a real zombie invasion.”
