Case in point: a new ‘eco’ retirement village planned for Nerang on the Gold Coast.
If approved, its 24 homes would be made from 40 per cent recycled building materials and feature “neutral architecture” designed to blend in with the natural landscape.
Future residents would also have access to community vegetable gardens, solar power technology and tank water initiatives and walking tracks.
Eco-friendly retirement living is not new. Many villages incorporate sustainable features but the Nerang village is another step up and could prove a savvy move for the developer.
A recent US survey found around 50 per cent of baby boomers want energy-efficient and sustainable features in their homes to save money and benefit the environment.
Take Stockland’s Selandra Rise village in Melbourne which awarded the first Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) 4-Star Green Star Certification. It’s currently sold out – and there’s a waiting list.
The demand is there – expect to see more developers target this market.
