Sue Curran is not only the oldest woman competing at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast – she’s also visually impaired too and the “youngest” (least experienced) bowler on the para lawn bowls team.
Ms Curran played netball and tennis when she was younger, but didn’t take up bowling until 65, after her husband passed away.
A member of New Zealand’s “Blind Jacks” lawn bowls team, she’s now taken part in two blind world championships and came fourth in the para paired bowls at the 2014 Games in Glasgow.
Being sight-impaired, Ms Curran has a “director”, Ann Muir, who guides her on the green – similar to a golf caddy – and says she’s in awe of the bowler’s talent.
“She never lets me down,” Ann told The Guardian. “You imagine being blindfolded. Number one you don’t have any balance at all. Then you’ve got no idea where you are.”
We’re definitely in awe too.
