98-year-old resident hits the road after aged care home grants his biggest wish

Claude McKnight is well known around his hometown of Mount Morgan in far-north Queensland as a motorbike enthusiast. He still talks about his 1948 Triumph two-wheeler, which he keeps photos of in his room at the Carinity Summit Cottages aged care community.

So when the staff at Summit Cottages asked Claude what his biggest wish was, he unsurprisingly said “to ride a motorbike around Mount Morgan”.

The Summit team quickly got to work, organising for Claude to take a 30-minute joyride in the sidecar of a World War II Harley Davidson “Liberator” US army motorcycle (pictured).

“When the bike arrived Claude’s face lit up. He was taken past his old home as well as down the main street of Mount Morgan”, said Activities Officer, Leeann Rolfe. “You couldn’t wipe the smile off his face”.

Claude’s motorbike adventure is the first of a number of “extra special wishes” being arranged by Carinity for its residents – they’ve also treated others to a game of football or golf, or a trip to the races.

“Everyone has the right to live the life they love – a life without limits. Assisting our residents to live a life with purpose and sharing special life experiences with them is what we are here to do”, said Ms Rolfe.

We couldn’t agree more – amazing work.
