73-year-old Victorian farmer breaks neck – rides home holding his own head up by his hair

Yes, really. “Jim” as he’s known was on his motorcycle on his West Gippsland farm last month when he hit a ditch.

“I got to my feet, I knew there was something seriously wrong,” Jim said. “My head wouldn’t stay up.”

In need of urgent help, Jim decided the best way home was 500 metres back on the bike – supporting his own head.

“The pain, it hurt so much, so I just held it up by my hair,” he said.

The tough nut was transferred to hospital where doctors diagnosed him with two neck fractures but with “four bolts in his skull”, Jim’s now expected to make a full recovery.

“I’m a lucky fella, that’s for sure,” he said.

Now that’s the understatement of the century.
