30-year-old Liz White happily lives in US retirement village

Liz White is unlike any 30-year-old I know, or even the 30-year-old I once was. She is more than happy living in a retirement village, even though she is 25 years younger than anyone else in the village.

The lifestyle village is for people aged 55 and over yet Liz, who was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, decided to lease a unit after three years of visiting her parents in the lifestyle community in Florida.

“My parents are snowbirds, they’re in their 60s. So, I had already come down and visited and met everyone,” she said on her TikTok account Liz Wizdom.

“So, when a unit became available that I wanted to rent, they already knew that, yeah I’m young, but I’m not going to be throwing ragers and I’m DTP – that means down to puzzle.”

Liz, who works from her unit, films her interactions with the residents and posts them on her TikTok account. They provide meaningful insight into living in a retirement village. Initially, she feared she might not make many friends, but has discovered the opposite.

The community leads an active social life by organising group activities, casual get-togethers, and themed parties once a month. In a video this week, Liz shared what she got up to in a typical day, including a visit to the library to exchange some puzzles, and sampling her 80-year-old neighbour’s homemade bread.

In Australia, residents in most retirement villages must be at least 55 years of age. The person’s spouse, regardless of age and employment status, is also entitled to live in the village. But the average entry to a retirement village is around 75 years.
