The dystopian classic can thank new President Donald Trump.
Just days after White House press secretary Sean Spicer lied to the media about the size of crowds at Trump’s inauguration, it skyrocketed to No. 6, and then overnight to No. 1.
Interviewed about the lie on US TV, his adviser Kellyanne Conway said Mr Spicer was simply supplying “alternative facts.”
It sounds disturbingly similar to the book’s plot in which main character Winston Smith is given the job of replacing historical truths with new, state-approved “facts”.
A sign of the times?
Its sales also spiked in 2013 following the mass leaking of US National Security Agency documents.
Publisher Penguin is now rushing to print extra copies. “We put through a 75,000 copy reprint this week. That is a substantial reprint,” a spokesperson said.
We’re not sure if author George Orwell would be smiling or turning in this grave.
